Chapter Ten

Astrid’s pale form lay strewn across her silk sheets, glassy eyes staring at nothing on the wall. The cut was clean, the slice thin and quick. Lilian knelt beside the bed, examining her ghostly body for signs of a struggle. She wasn’t an expert, but she’d expected bruises or something on her body.

There was nothing, every inch of her curvy limbs clear. Whoever did this musta done it in her sleep, before she even knew what was comin’, she thought. She peeled her tongue from the roof of her mouth, dry as bone, nearly gagging from the act of breathing.

I know you better than you know me, Astrid had said, and she was right. Lilian had managed to evade her manipulations, but to no insight of her own into what the woman’s end game was. Surely, it wasn’t to die brutally in her sleep.

“Who was the last person to see her?” Davien asked from the doorway, and Lilian glanced up to focus on Jamie’s face.

He had the kind of face that, for some people, could easily charm. He was classically handsome, with all the proper proportions, but his mouth never seemed to match his eyes.

“Petra was the one who found her.” He crossed his arms, and leaned in, lowering his voice. “She’s real upset. You can try talkin’ to her, but I don’t know if she’s in any state to answer any questions.”

Davien shook his head. “I mean alive.”

Jamie frowned in confusion, and his eyebrows raised. “I… last night, I guess?” He pursed his lips in thought. “The last person I saw come outta this room… well it was you, Madam Sheriff.”

Lilian ran her tongue over her teeth, tasting ashes. “I guess I’m number one in line for the noose, then,” she said dryly.

Davien glared at her, but she ignored him.

“I’ll be needin’ names of everyone who stayed here last night,” she said as she walked around the perimeter of the room, looking for anything else out of place. “Did you have someone watchin’ the door?”

Jamie shook his head. “Eli got too drunk and wandered off.”

“Fuckin’ professional.” She sighed. “I’ll station somebody to keep an eye on things.”

He smiled warmly, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Thankya, Sheriff, I’ll make sure everythin’ runs smooth.” He tipped his hat and left.

Davien latched the door softly behind him. “You think the other girls are in danger?”

“No, I’m thinkin’ this was a one-off thing,” Lilian replied, turning again to look at the bed. “Astrid didn’t have many friends in this town. Especially given the timin’.”

“Then why station someone here?”

“Cause I’m bettin’ the other girls are afraid. And I want eyes on the people here.” She chewed her lip for a moment. “I got a gut feelin’ it was somebody here.”

He crossed the room and turned her to face him, voice low. “You don’t think it was someone in town trying to kill the business?”

“Might be.” She took a deep breath. “Or might be someone tryin’ to make it look that way.”

“That would make things a lot more complicated.
